Digital Receipts: Beyond The Green Benefit

This white paper from Celerant™ Technology Corporation takes a look at the growth of digital receipts in the retail space, focusing on “The Green Factor” and the branding and security benefits that digital receipts provide. In terms of environmental sustainability, digital receipts are extremely valuable since paper receipts have a devastating impact on the environment.

This white paper notes several statistics from now-defunct allEtronic (an early proponent of digital receipts that suffered its position on the bleeding-edge). Here are two samples:

  • In the U.S. alone, retailers consume 640,000 tons of thermal receipt paper per year, requiring 9.6 million trees for their manufacture.
  • It takes approximately 390 gallons of oil to produce a single ton of paper. At 640,000 tons of thermal receipt paper demanded per year, that's nearly 250 million gallons of oil, enough to produce almost 16 million gallons of gas.

It also takes a look at the branding and security benefits that green receipts provide. Electronic receipts can deliver promotional content, provide cross-channel synergies and benefits, push you closer to a truly omnichannel brand presence, and are easier and more efficient to test and track than paper-based promotions. It is also much more difficult to counterfeit or otherwise manipulate digital receipts as compared to printed ones.
