Amazon Announces Plans to Lower Costs at Whole Foods

You can draw many conclusions from Amazon buying Whole Foods, and one of the more overlooked angles is how the deal solidified a long-developing trend: Organic products have finally gone mainstream. Amazon has already announced they plan to immediately lower prices on a selection of best-selling items, including organic produce, such as avocados and baby kale.

One of the challenges for Amazon will be working with the higher operating costs of the natural food products industry. The deal also has Whole Foods’ organic producers wondering exactly what the Amazon purchase means for them.

One potential plus for organic producers is access to Amazon’s vast online market, where organic products often do well. Amazon has approximately 80 million members enrolled in Amazon Prime and they have announced they are planning to give members special Whole Foods deals and in-store benefits.
